Collagen and hyaluronic acid: how they differ and why they are used together

Often in the same formula, but not the same thing: what collagen and hyaluronic acid are and why they are offered together.

Collagen and hyaluronic acid: two different ingredients that work side by side in the skin.

Collagen gives the skin structure and support; hyaluronic acid helps it hold water. They have different roles that complement each other: that is why supplements and cosmetics often pair them, and they can be taken together by following the dose shown on the label.

Collagen and hyaluronic acid often appear together, on supplement labels as well as on cream labels. But they are not the same thing, and they do not do the same job. Let’s look at what sets them apart and why they are paired.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the body. In the skin, it is concentrated mainly in the dermis, where it forms a network of fibres that gives firmness and support to the tissues. It is also present in cartilage, bones and connective tissues.

Over time, natural collagen production can decrease: that is why it has become one of the most sought-after ingredients in skincare. In our guide to collagen you’ll find what it is for and why the dose matters. For sources and types, there’s the article on bovine or marine collagen.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is not a protein but a glycosaminoglycan, a long chain of sugars naturally present in the skin. Its distinctive feature is its ability to bind and hold water, which is why it plays a key role in tissue hydration.

The difference between collagen and hyaluronic acid

  • Nature: collagen is a fibrous protein, made up of chains of amino acids, while hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide, a long chain made of two repeating sugars.
  • Role in the skin: collagen forms the scaffolding of the dermis; hyaluronic acid fills the spaces between the fibres and holds water.
  • Main function: structure and support for collagen, hydration for hyaluronic acid.
  • In products: collagen appears mainly in supplements, in the form of hydrolysed collagen peptides; hyaluronic acid mainly in cosmetics, such as serums and creams, but also in some supplements.

In supplements they are often joined by vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. When you read a label, always look at the quantities: which collagen it contains and how many grams per dose, how many milligrams of hyaluronic acid, which vitamins and minerals complete the formula. The full criteria are in the guide on how to choose a drinkable collagen.

In short: collagen supports the skin; hyaluronic acid keeps it hydrated. Rather than alternatives, they are complementary.

To drink or to apply: what changes

A supplement and a cosmetic work on different levels.

  • A supplement works from within: it provides collagen peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamins and minerals, to be taken every day.
  • A cosmetic works on the surface: the hyaluronic acid in a serum or cream helps the skin hold water and look smoother and more radiant.

It isn’t a choice between two alternatives: a supplement and a cream can be part of the same routine, each with its own role.

Collagen and hyaluronic acid in Mialica products

Each vial of Collagen PRO5 contains 5 g of Verisol® collagen peptides, 100 mg of hyaluronic acid and 150 mg of N-acetyl D-glucosamine, an amino sugar that is a building block of hyaluronic acid. The formula also includes 180 mg of vitamin C, zinc, vitamin A and biotin.

In the Linea Viso, hyaluronic acid is found in both the Face Serum, with peptides, bakuchiol and niacinamide, and the 24H Face Cream, with niacinamide, peptides and exosomes.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, collagen or hyaluronic acid?

They are not in competition: they have different roles and can be part of the same routine. Rather than choosing between the two, it makes sense to look for a formula that contains both, in the right amounts.

Can they be taken together?

Yes, many formulas already contain both. Follow the dose shown on the label and, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or undergoing medical treatment, ask your doctor first. For methods and timing, see the guide on how and when to take collagen.

In summary

Collagen is a structural protein, hyaluronic acid a molecule that holds water. In the skin they go together, which is why supplements and cosmetics pair them. Rather than choosing one, what matters is reading the label carefully and building a routine that is easy to follow every day.
